Micrometer

A micrometer is a precision tool used to measure small dimensions such as the thickness, diameter, or length of an object with high accuracy. It’s commonly used in mechanical engineering, machining, and manufacturing for quality control and component verification.

The four main types of micrometers are:

• Outside micrometer – measures external dimensions
• Inside micrometer – measures internal diameters
• Depth micrometer – measures hole or recess depths

Digital micrometers generally offer higher ease of use and faster, error-free readings compared to analog (mechanical) micrometers. However, analog micrometers are more durable in rugged environments. Both types provide excellent accuracy, but digital is preferred for repeatability and data recording in modern quality control systems.

An external micrometer (outside micrometer) is used to measure the outer dimensions—such as the diameter or thickness—of an object. It’s commonly used in manufacturing, machining, and engineering to check parts with high accuracy, often within microns.

 An internal micrometer is designed to measure the inside diameters of holes, cylinders, pipes, and bores. It helps verify tolerance and concentricity, ensuring parts meet engineering specifications in mechanical and production applications.

An objective micrometer, often found in microscopes, is used to calibrate the field of view and measure small objects viewed under magnification. It helps determine accurate dimensions of microscopic samples, commonly used in laboratories and research settings.
